Read to Children--Be a POP Volunteer

Love books? Enjoy children? The library is looking for volunteers to share the joy of books by reading stories to children in childcare centers. Each volunteer visits their assigned center twice monthly to deliver brief storytime programs.

No formal experience is needed, just a commitment to the value of books and the importance of reading to children. We provide all the materials. The job requires about 4-5 hours a month after a mandatory one day training workshop. We ask for a one year commitment.

The next training session is Saturday, March 13th at the East Asheville Library from 9am to 2:30pm. All interested volunteers must submit a completed volunteer application and criminal background check before attending. Applications are available on the library website or at any Buncombe County Public Library.

For more information please call 250-4729 or email pop@buncombecounty.org.

West Asheville Library Celebrates Earth Day with Film

EARTH DAYS

Monday, March 15 at 7pm West Asheville Library

Join local environmental thinker Jim Barton for this special advance showing of Director Robert Stones new documentary, Earth Days, which traces the history of the modern environmental movement .

The New York Times review called the film a beautifully composed tribute to visionary thinking and political ingenuity, a time line of peaks and valleys stretching from the early initiatives of the 1950s to the legislative successes of the 1970s.

This program is free and the public is invited. For more information please contact the West Asheville Library by phone at 250-4750 or email westashevile.library@buncombe county.org

Pack Library Closes for Renovation

Due to an ongoing renovation project, Pack Memorial Library is now closed and will remain closed for 6-8 months. The library will reopen in the fall of 2010. A temporary public computer center will open on the librarys lower level in March.

The librarys renovation will include a larger childrens and youth section, an added meeting room, a relocation and expansion of the North Carolina Collection and more computer access.

A three-story tower with fire exits and restrooms will be added to the north side of the building. In addition, all the lighting, heating and cooling and electrical systems will be completely upgraded with more energy efficient replacements.

While Pack Library is closed, library patrons can use any of the other 11 branches in the library system. Patrons can also download books and audio books directly from the librarys website.
